Job Description:

Dispatch all customer service calls to staff and coordinates with 311 to address all related issues regarding Animal Control. Assists supervisor in developing logistical scheduling of calls and interventions in the most expedient and efficient manner. Answers all calls from the public on animal control issues.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Assists citizens with the interpretations and understanding of animal control ordinances and providing them with information on how to be a responsible animal owner.
  • Monitors the activities of the Animal Care Officers, oversees the Officer’s locations, and takes appropriate action to ensure the Officer’s safety while in the field.
  • Using the proper software, creates a work order for each case on the “Animal Control Call Log.”
  • Provides the Officers in the field with background information pertaining to the animal involved in the case, i.e. dangerous dog, previous incidents involving the animal, the owner of the animal, and any other
  • information which is necessary for the officer to handle the case.
  • Assists the Officers in the field by contacting the citizens who expressed their concerns and informing them of the actions taken by the Officers.
  • Monitors the status of work orders and cases assigned to the Animal Care Officers and ensures that work orders are completed and closed by the Animal Care Officers.
  • Using the radio, telephone, or other means of communication, notifies the assigned Animal Care Officer of the case including the nature of the concern and all the other pertinent information about the case.
  • Creates a case record on the “Animal Control Call Log” form for each concern requiring action from the Animal Care Office. The log contains pertinent information about the case to include the date and time the concern was expressed; the name, address and phone number of the person expressing the concern; a brief description of the concern; the risk priority of the concern; the time and the location where the concern occurred; the name of the Animal Care Officer assigned to address the concern; and the time that the officer in the field was notified..

Job Requirements:

  • Ability to read and correctly interpret maps, directories, and other information to determine the location of the concern and assign available field personnel.
  • Ability to effectively, courteously, and calmly collect all the necessary information in emergencies or emotionally-charged situations.
  • Ability to interpret and implement city animal and fowl ordinance (i.e. permits, neglect, keeping practices, etc.)
  • Ability to enforce local, state, and federal laws governing animal control.
  • Knowledge of techniques, procedures, and methods used in operating a dispatch center including knowledge of Federal Communications Commission regulations applying to the operation of a two-way radio.
  • Ability to maintain good planning and organizational skills.
  • Ability to correctly analyze and prioritize citizen/general public requests (including emergencies) and take action to provide the most efficient and effective service according to protocol.
