Job Description:

Under direction, leads, oversees, reviews and performs work activities and duties assigned to classes in the Advanced Water Treatment Operator (AWTO) series including the operation and minor maintenance of the Advanced Water Purification Facility (AWPF) and Water desalter facility systems, processes and related equipment; demonstrates a full understanding of all applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties; occasionally assists in the training of lower level AWTO positions and/or newer personnel; assumes responsibility for the more difficult and complex tasks; and performs related duties as required.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Additional procedures include, safe chemical handling.  Chemical handling procedures include, but are not limited to, safe chemical delivery unloading, safe chemical transferring, chemical leak identification and isolation, and liquid lime line flushing.
  • Perform additional duties as required.  These duties will include maintaining both digital and written operational logs and records, collecting samples and performing simple laboratory tests for process control purposes, housekeeping and preventative maintenance duties.
  • Monitors AWPF SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) alarms, instruments, gauges, and meters for process control.
  • Checks pumps, motors, hydraulic lines, structures, pressure tanks and mechanical equipment for proper condition and operations.
  • Instructs others and takes meter, gauge and control panel readings and observes variations in operating conditions; interprets readings; monitors and changes flows and processes within established parameters; reports readings and processing changes on operation logs and records.
  • Collects samples and performs routine chemical tests/analyses, records sampling and test results, prepares samples for testing in central laboratory as needed; analyzes and evaluates in-house laboratory results, data and procedures and takes corrective action as appropriate.
  • Operates fork lift within the facility.
  • Responds to questions and concerns from the general public; provides information as is appropriate and resolves complaints.
  • Demonstrates a full understanding of applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties.
  • The AWPF wetlands project has yet to be placed in operation.  All AWPF operators will be expected to work on this project.  This will include vegetation maintenance such removal of non-native or invasive species (weeding) and replanting design vegetation.  The development of operational strategies and procedures for the wetlands is expected.

Job Requirements:

  • Possess the equivalent of three (3) years of experience in the operation and maintenance of an advanced water/water/wastewater treatment facility with at least one (1) year in a lead capacity, or the performance of related work, and;
  • The equivalent of a high school diploma.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid C California driver’s license.
  • The Senior Advanced Water Treatment Operator position requires a California Water Environment Association (CWEA) AWTO Grade 3 certificate  be attained within 18 months of employment.
  • Candidates must have either a Grade III Wastewater Plant Operator Certificate or a T3 Water Treatment Operator Certificate upon employment to be eligible for the AWTO 3 certification.
