Job Description:

This position is located in the National Weather Service (NWS) Alaska Aviation Weather Unit (AAWU). The two vacancies work in the Meteorological Watch Office (AAWU) and Anchorage Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (A-VAAC) located in Anchorage, AK.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Applicants currently occupying a 1340 series position in the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration and applying under competitive merit promotion procedures are covered under the “Exception” clause and DO NOT need to submit transcripts.
  • As needed, provide weather advice and guidance to the aviation community, the general public, and others. Provide forecasts and weather briefings to press, radio, and television stations.
  • Conduct or participate in the conduct of local studies and developmental projects designed to capitalize on or incorporate the benefits of new science, technology, and local techniques into AAWU operations.
  • The working title for this position is General Forecaster. As a General Forecaster, you will perform the following duties:
  • Participate in all forecast and service programs assigned to the Alaska Aviation Weather Unit (AAWU), including developing and issuing scheduled and unscheduled products; and preparing and issuing aviation advisories and warnings for the AAWU service area for several hazardous weather conditions such as turbulence, icing, convection, and volcanic ash.
  • Conduct a weather watch which involves interpretation of Doppler radar data and satellite imagery, and the analysis of other meteorological and hydrologic data in order to determine the need of warnings, statements, or advisories; and the need for issuing or updating aviation forecasts.

Job Requirements:

  • This position is in the bargaining unit.
  • Must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable (www.sss.gov).
  • Time-in-grade/band must be met by closing date of announcement.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National to apply.
  • A one year probationary period may be required.
  • Must be suitable for Federal employment.
  • Payment of relocation expenses is authorized.
  • Required to pass a background investigation and fingerprint check.

Qualification & Experience:

  • Degree: meteorology, atmospheric science, or other natural science major that included:
  • At least 24 semester (36 quarter) hours of credit in meteorology/atmospheric science including a minimum of:
  • Six semester hours of atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics;*
  • Six semester hours of analysis and prediction of weather systems (synoptic/mesoscale);
  • Three semester hours of physical meteorology; and
  • Two semester hours of remote sensing of the atmosphere and/or instrumentation.
  • Six semester hours of physics, with at least one course that includes laboratory sessions.*
  • Three semester hours of ordinary differential equations.*
  • At least nine semester hours of course work appropriate for a physical science major in any combination of three or more of the following: physical hydrology, statistics, chemistry, physical oceanography, physical climatology, radiative transfer, aeronomy, advanced thermodynamics, advanced electricity and magnetism, light and optics, and computer science.
