Job Description:

In order to be eligible for hire into a position requiring a CDL, applicants must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a pre-employment query. Job Responsibilities:

Operates vehicles and a variety of small and medium equipment that may include, but not limited to; front end loader, skid steer loader, grader, lift equipment, small bulldozer and asphalt repair truck while performing bridge and roadway maintenance; Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment; checks and adds fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc. Cleans and washes equipment.

  • Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways. Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Performs tree trimming, rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
  • Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic). Assists with crew activity reports as needed.

Job Requirements:

  • Knowledge of: mathematical calculations; standard safety rules and procedures. Skilled in: operating a variety of hand and power tools; operating and performing minor maintenance on small/medium equipment and vehicles. Ability to: operate a variety of heavy equipment; read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms; maintain and repair highways, bridges and/or other highway structures; communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions; develop and maintain effective working relationships with others; lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds; stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis; work outdoors in various weather conditions on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic; work independently; stand for an extended period of time.
  • Due to the nature of this position, the incumbent must respond to emergencies when necessary. Possess a valid Class “B” CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) Instructional Permit is required at time of hire. Obtain a valid Class “B” CDL with air brakes within 180 days of hire. While on-duty status, the position’s incumbent must be readily available to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) consistent with the type of Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions. Obtains certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) – Intermediate Level within one year and maintains. The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.
  • Requires one year of experience in the operation of heavy equipment. Possess a valid Class “B” CDL Instructional Permit is required at time of hire. A valid Class “B” CDL with air brakes is required within 180 days of hire.
